This is why I love Asuka Tenjoin. Not because she’s gorgeous, or even because she’s a formidable opponent (albeit both are true and both contribute to a point), but because she recognizes and establishes herself as equal in an environment where women are considered to be second rate to men.

First of all, if you haven’t read the manga, this chapter is called Miss Academia, in which male duelists are to cast their votes on who they think deserves the title of Miss Academia, which is essentially a beauty pageant of sorts that has absolutely nothing to do with dueling talent whatsoever.

Right away Asuka isn’t fond of it. She doesn’t even show up with the other 4 nominees because she could care less about who wins and who loses, even if she ends up becoming the winner. It’s not even because she doesn’t think she can win, it’s simply because she feels that the event in itself is extraordinarily demeaning to the female student population, boiling down their worth as a duelist to their worth as a woman.

This competition is a popularity contest, and Asuka does not need the approval of her male peers in order to see herself as a worthy duelist.

“I am…a duelist!”

*This chapter also really makes me love her dynamic with Judai even more, to. Because he helps her realize that she can be both a woman and a duelist. Which is great because that way the series doesn’t disregard her femininity while trying to establish that worth.

This! All this!

Asuka is a very special character - from the let go she hardly does anything people expects her to do. Sure, she is one exceptional student, smart and strong. However the only time we see Asuka going with the crowd is when she was brainwashed by the Society of Light and even so her personality is so strong she had to go through that twice in order to Saiou have complete control over her.

She thinks little of whoever sees her as a girl or sees her as a prize to be won, a trophy: whenever her own brother decides to pull his shenanigans, or Manjoume wants to court her or even some other duelist bullshits her she won’t hold back. Asuka won’t take anything from anybody.

Another thing I adore about her is how she can read people : she got interested in Judai’s personality from the first duel, instead of judging him because he was a Osiris. Later, she was kind to Hayato and acknowledged a talent that the boy didn’t knew he had, and this without even knowing him for long. (it was the first time they’ve met I guess?)

I adore her relationship with Judai: he doesn’t sees her as a girl, but ‘one of the guys’. She’s strong, bold and proud, her dueling skills are top-knot and is not afraid of doing risky combos.

Her determination to save Fubuki during season 1 was inspiring, even through at times she suffered from poor writing (the very old ‘protag must save the day’)

C’mon, how many times you have seen a girl kidnapping the hero’s sidekick? She totally won my respect there
